Sour, Bitter, Metallic Taste

Monday, September 10th, 2007

The reason that taste disorders are related to Bad Breath is due to the sulfur produced by these anaerobic bacteria, particularly on the back (dorsum) of the tongue. Although it was extremely difficult for us to find a direct relationship between sulfide molecules and this area of the tongue in American Medical or Dental textbooks, several Asian Medical texts made reference to Sour, Bitter, and Metallic tastes associated with the rear of the tongue. This fact is very logical, because the bacteria that produce the Sulfur Compounds breed in the back of the tongue which is the area susceptible to sour, bitter, and metallic tastes.

Smell and Taste

Neurologically, the sense of smell and the sense of taste have two distinct physical centers in the brain, where specific electrical impulses are received. However, they happen to be next door neighbors. There is physical evidence which show that the receptors for these are separate senses often intermingle with each other. This causes some to detect a sense of odor, even though there is none, based on a stimulation in the taste center, and vice versa.

Pharmaceutical companies realized early on that it could be very easy to “fool” the public by creating strong flavors in oral rinses, which would then be “sensed” by the brain as if the user’s breath was fresh.

One must understand that just as seeing and hearing are 2 different senses, and so are smelling and taste. You can have a great minty taste in your mouth (after using Altoids, let’s say), but the odor being sensed by the person next to you at work can be a disagreeable sulfur odor. This is true because the sugar in those products stimulate the bacteria to produce more sulfur compounds.

Some oral rinses are flavored to be “mediciny” with the distinct purpose of creating the sense to the user that this “medicine” flavor is actually doing something. Therabreath Oral Rinses are designed to fight and prevent bad breath, not mask it.

pH and Tastes:
Sour, bitter, metallic tastes are all acidic in nature. Our medicated products are the only ones of their type to be pH balanced in such a manner as to neutralize more oral acids. This is significant when attempting to raise the pH (make the environment less acidic) and eliminate these tastes in order to freshen the oral cavity. Your TheraBreath instructions also include procedures to change the pH and methods to better attack the bacteria which are normally very difficult to reach.

For those individuals who may have a slightly more “acidic” oral environment or saliva, here’s a helpful hint:

Sprinkle a small amount of Baking Soda on the bristles of your dry toothbrush. Then place TheraBreath toothgel over the Baking Soda to cover the bristles – then brush. The Baking Soda neutralizes more of the oral acids and creates a “cleaner” taste sensation.

Finally, A Breath Mint That Does What Its Supposed To!

Monday, September 10th, 2007
  • Actually Removes Bad Breath and Taste
  • Stops Production of Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC’s)
  • Stimulates Oxygen-Rich Saliva Flow

by Dr. Harold Katz – Founder, California Breath Clinics

Since I started the California Breath Clinics in 1994, I have never recommended or endorsed any kind of breath mint. Simply put, there was nothing that I ever found that was truly a breath freshener.

All the “breath candies” that you’re used to seeing in the stores (Altoids, Tic-Tacs, Certs, Ice Breakers, etc…) all commit some kind of fatal mistake in the documented science of creating fresh breath. You see, by now the academic halitosis community knows the causes of bad breath…. and we also know the exact conditions that create an oral environment in your mouth that is MORE LIKELY to produce bad breath.

The first Breath Mint that is a REAL Breath Freshener So wouldn’t you think that a ‘breath mint’ should contain ingredients that make this oral environment less likely to happen? At the very least, there shouldn’t be anything in there would make that oral environment WORSE, right?

You can probably see what I’m getting at…. the top breath fresheners on the market ALL contain either sugar (which the bad breath bacteria absolutely feast on), or they contain an artificial flavor designed to cover-up rather than prevent bad breath and taste.

NONE OF THEM Contain Any Clinically Proven, Breath-Refreshing Ingredients.

ZOX mints are the first breath mint designed to remove bad breath instead of mask it.

Now first let me get one thing straight …. if you have chronic halitosis, then DON’T expect a breath mint to make the problem go away (although they are an excellent maintenance device if you are already using the TheraBreath system in the morning and night). My last 10 years have been spent helping people who mostly have had chronic halitosis problems – the type of condition that every time you talk with a person you detect an odor from their breath.

But there is a type of bad breath out there that is common to everyone that I’ve been largely ignoring for the last 10 years! I refer to this type as situational bad breath. Situational Bad Breath occurs in 99.9% of the world population at one time or another (statistically just about everybody, but my lawyers make me say it like that!). It happens when someone activates a ‘trigger‘ that causes the oral environment in their mouth to become more likely for the anaerobic bacteria to begin creating the volatile sulfur compounds (VSC’s) that cause bad breath.

In scientific terms, when your mouth encounters one of these triggers, it creates an oral environment that encourages the anaerobic bacteria to begin extracting sulfur compounds from specific amino acids. One amino acid (Cysteine) turns into Hydrogen Sulfide (the rotten-egg smell), and another amino acid (Methionine) becomes Methyl Mercaptan which smells sort of like dirty socks!

So Let’s Take A Real-World Example For A Minute…

You get together with some friends one weekend for bite to eat at a delectable restaurant that serves cheese fondue, with a strawberry daiquiri to cap it off.

You want to make sure you have fresh breath, so after dinner you pop in an Altoid or other such breath candy . . . . STOP!

Although you may have a cinnamon-like taste in your mouth, what you’ve really just done is made your bad breath problem MUCH worse. Let me explain:

During dinner, you introduced two ‘triggers‘ to your mouth (protein and alcohol) that weren’t previously there and made your particular oral environment very eager to begin creating those foul-smelling VSC’s.

Then after dinner, by sucking on that mint, you actually gave those bacteria a food source they LOVE (sugar) to help along the VSC production. Yes, it’s true you TASTE cinnamon or mint, but that’s only a temporary cover up and what people actually SMELL is usually a lot worse!

ZOX is The First Breath Mint To Actually NEUTRALIZE Bad Breath Production.

I created ZOX because I wanted to address the fact that almost all the other ‘breath mints‘ on the market DO NOT take into account the principles of halitosis prevention that I’ve been studying for the last 10 years! Most of them are created to TASTE GOOD and that’s about it. ZOX was created based on the same clinically proven Zinc/Oxygen/Xylitol principles used by the rest of the TheraBreath product line. It is literally bad breath prevention science packed into a roll of breath mints!

First, ZOX have no sugar – your breath mint should NEVER have sugar in it. ZOX uses xylitol which is a natural sweetener and has also been proven to have tremendous anti-decay properties.

Next, we added zinc gluconate for it’s ability to literally put a “straight-jacket” around those ‘bad-breath producing’ anaerobic bacteria. Zinc Gluconate blocks the receptors on the anaerobic bacteria so that they don’t bind with the amino acids. And if they don’t bind with the amino acids, then they don’t produce VSC’s!

ZOX contains no aspartame, no saccharin, and no artificial colors or flavors.

ZOX has been specifically created for the sole purpose of preventing bad breath, and removing metallic tastes, NOT for just covering them up. The longer you keep a ZOX in your mouth, the more volatile sulfur compounds it will neutralize.

Plus, each mint is only 5 calories, so you can have as many as you want.

The bottom line is that all-natural ZOX are the first and only breath mint to neutralize bad breath based on the clinically proven methods practiced by the California Breath Clinics over the past 10 years.

For control of ‘occasional‘ or ‘situational‘ bad breath there is nothing better than ZOX.

All my Best,

-Harold Katz, DDS

Why TheraBreath Works So Well

Monday, September 10th, 2007

The TheraBreath System and its products are based on highly potent, but extremely safe Oxyd-VIIIā„¢. Oxyd-VIII is a refined and properly pH balanced formula derived from a chemical used in water purification for over 100 years, Sodium Chlorite. Our products have surpassed the “older” chemical known as “active” Chlorine Dioxide, to provide amazing results. The significant improvements have been registered both clinically and from Real People just like you, who have switched from one product to another.

[…”Dr. Katz, When I switched from…(one of our competitors) to your new formula I was a bit skeptical, but I wanted to try it to get rid of that lousy taste in my mouth. Thank you for explaining the difference, now my taste is the freshest it’s been in 30 years, and even my grandchildren have started to kiss me again. Thank God for your miracle cure…”]

7 Reasons Why TheraBreath is Superior to any other group of Products

One:
Our active ingredient is Stabilized and generates Oxidizing Power as soon as it enters your mouth. This stabilization process allows TheraBreath to have up to a 3 year shelf-life.
[NOTE: Do not be confused by jealous competitors who state that TheraBreath does not contain active chlorine dioxide. Those statements are made to confuse the public. When any of the TheraBreath products enter your mouth, a chemical reaction takes place, which allows PLENTY of Fresh Oxidation every time you use it. That’s why thousands of TheraBreath kits are sold every week in North America, Asia, Europe, South America, and Australia!]

Two:
TheraBreath has become the most “user-friendly” Anti-Halitosis System, featuring an Oral Rinse, Toothpaste, Breath Spray, Concentrated PowerDrops, and Oxygenating Chewing Gum, all designed to attack the root of the problem throughout the day with the utmost of convenience.

Some Breath-refreshing systems rely solely on mouthwash to fight bad breath.

Three:
TheraBreath ToothGel also contains Sodium Fluoride which fights decay. Fluoride has also been shown to be an effective de-sensitizing agent. Some of the other “Anti-Halitosis” systems do not contain any Fluoride at all. Before you purchase any “anti-Halitosis” product, make sure to ask if it contains Fluoride.

Four:
We have added highly concentrated Whole Leaf Aloe Vera to our toothpaste. Recent research in Asia has shown that Aloe Vera boosts the body’s ability to create collagen, which in turn strengthens weak and swollen gums to heal more quickly. (Bleeding gums provide a protein food source to the bacteria that create bad breath). No other “anti-Halitosis” system contains this form of Aloe Vera to fight this added problem.

Five:
Our toothpaste or tooth”gel” does not contain Saccharin. (some other breath-refreshing products do). Saccharin has been shown to be carcinogenic in lab animals. Also, for some people, Saccharin creates a bitter aftertaste, due to one of the chemical compounds produced during Saccharin’s chemical breakdown.

Six:
TheraBreath toothpaste does not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a harsh detergent), which has been shown to be related to an increased incidence of canker sores. Almost all toothpastes contain this chemical. Research has shown that SLS should not be used by those who suffer from canker sores. And because the toothpaste does not contain SLS, (which will cause high levels of foam in the mouth), you will be better able to cleanse these odor-causing bacteria from your mouth by being able to brush longer.

Seven:
Our toothpaste is actually a gel. Chemically speaking, gels are much smaller molecules than pastes, allowing deeper penetration below the tongue surface. TheraBreath toothpaste also contains premiere tooth polishing and whitening agents, in order to keep your smile white and brilliant, but without damaging abrasives. They are cruelty-free and are not harmful to the environment.

Clinical Studies on TheraBreath:

Presented on August 20, 1999 at UCLA – The University of California at Los Angeles – (at the 4th International Conference on Oral Malodor)

The Effects of Oxygenating TheraBreath Products on Bad Breath Patients – Testing of Saliva Production, and Reduction of VSC by Flame Chromatography and Halimeter Values.b

Bacterial production of Hydrogen Sulphide plays the main role in the ethiopathogenesis of bad breath, although there are several minor etiologic factors which also play a role. The anaerobic bacteria live in ideal areas, unreachable by oxygen, such as the back of the throat and tongue, interproximal areas of the teeth, periodontal pockets, and enlarged tonsilla. An oxygenating agent able to act in these regions could provide a benefit in eliminating halitosis.

Our study monitored 25 subjects at the Department of Periodontology of our University Dental School. The subjects all suffered with the most common signs of bad breath and were evaluated both before and after the study using GCF, Halimeter (manufactured by Interscan) readings, and their level of saliva production by a Periotron 8000.

Results showed a statistically significant decrease in Halimeter readings and GCF values, while at the same time increasing their level of saliva production.

Conclusion: TheraBreath products (Oral Rinse, Toothgel, Spray, PowerDrops, Chewing Gum, AktivOxigen Tablets) are able to scientifically eliminate bad breath (halitosis), while at the same time helping to create more saliva for those who suffer with dry mouth.

Why the OXYD-8 version of chlorine dioxide (used exclusively in TheraBreath) provides the longest & strongest relief:

TheraBreath is designed to produce copious amounts of “fresh, Potent” ClO2 “ON DEMAND” exactly where it’s needed – in the oral cavity, throat and tonsils.

Consumption of “FREE” ClO2 leads to replenishment of more “FREE” ClO2 by a simple Le Chatelier shift to the right.

The demand for ClO2 is caused by the presence of the proteins and acids in the anaerobic bacteria and the volatile sulfur compounds they produce. This sensitive trigger mechanism in the OXYD-8 active ingredient in TheraBreath does not require stabilizing elements, bleach (as used in the ProFresh system) or buffers needed in other formulas.

This allows TheraBreath to provide a much longer residual effect. Click Here to Order
