Get a Blindingly White, Celebrity-worthy Teeth

ist_000000361485Hugh Jackman. Emma Stone. Halle Berry. (Hallelujah, she’s got a smile). You name it, all these celebrities have picture-perfect teeth, which many of us seek to emulate. But what’s the best natural way to do whiten your smile? Teeth-whitening? Dedicated brushing after every meal? That’s a start.

A lot of celebrities have porcelain veneers, razor-thin strips of porcelain that are bonded over the front and sides of the original teeth, yet this cosmetic makeover can run anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500 per tooth. It’s ridiculously high, and most people don’t want to shell out the money unless they’re looking for a lone sparkling-white front tooth. In fact, they were not even created for the average working man or woman. The porcelain veneers were invented in the 1930s by a California dentist who wanted to improve the smiles for actors and actresses on stage and in front of the cameras in Hollywood.

But even if you aren’t casted for Transformers 7, is there a way to brighten that beautiful smile?

Best ways to get healthy white teeth

Like the celebrities, you likely want to show off that smile when you can.

Brush before breakfast
When we sleep, saliva production slows and plaque and bacteria starts to form on our teeth. When you brush after breakfast, the acids from sugary food multiply bacteria levels in your mouth. That’s why it’s important to brush prior to breakfast – not to mention to getting rid of morning breath. In addition, brushing too soon after the meals may be counter-productive. Acids from food weaken tooth enamel, so wait 30 minutes before brushing in order to avoid scraping the enamel off.

Eat crisp foods
Raw foods like apples, carrots, celery and bell peppers have surprisingly good cleaning effects. The crispness serves as a sort of scraper, dislodging food particles stuck in between teeth.

End of the line, wine
Wine-os, particularly those who drink red, it might be time to cut off the third glass of the evening. Red wines, sodas and tea all stain your teeth. If it’s dark going in, it’s going to be dark while clinging to your teeth. Brushing afterwards or even chewing gum for five minutes afterwards can help.

Toothbrush cleaning day
Set a day every two to three months to throw out your old toothbrush, or change heads on electric ones. Keeping a dirty bristle longer than that transfers bacteria back into your mouth, and in the words of a wise woman, “ain’t nobody got time for that.” Make sure to brush at least two to three times day with teeth-whitening toothpaste that contains fluoride to protect against cavities and will lighten the color of your teeth.

Apple cider vinegar
Before you brush in the morning, swish around a little apple cider vinegar in your mouth. The vinegar kills bacteria on the tongue and teeth that can cause bad breath. It also helps fight stains to whiten teeth.

Quality by contrast
A quick tip for ladies: apply rich, berry red lipstick when going out to boost the brightness of your smile. Stay away from bright orange or yellow-toned lipstick like tomato or coral because these make teeth appear more yellow.

Stock up on alcohol-free mouthwash
A lot of mouthwash has alcohol in it, which can dry out your mouth and leave it as a target for bacteria buildup. Find some without alcohol, such as Therabreath’s Icy Mint Oral Rinse to combat stains and bacteria for an effective bad breath remedy.

Loving the advice there, some useful tips. Looking for more natural ways, here’s a few:

A glass of water after eating to rinse away food debris.
    Strawberries contain natural whitening properties.
Chewing raisins increases saliva, a bit like chewing gum.
Milk, yoghurt and cheese contain properties which promote strong tooth enamel. A lot of staining is down to enamel loss.
And finally of course, brushing and flossing.
