Halloween and Healthy Alternatives to Candy

It’s that time of year again. The weather is getting cooler, school is back in session and Halloween is just around the corner. To most children Halloween means dressing up, Trick-or-Treating and enjoying various chocolate-covered and sugar crusted goodies.

This influx of sugar can definitely wreak havoc on teeth, leading to more cavities and high dental bills.

But there are alternative options to handing out the beloved sugar-coated treats. And if you do it right, you won’t get a lot of tiny tempers turning on you.

About.com suggests handing out sugar-free treats such as gum. Try non-edible but still fun goodies such as stickers, small cans of Playdoh or noise makers – remember, no kid wants to get an apple or carrots for Trick-or-Treating.

As reported by Orthodontic Products, in conjunction with National Orthodontic Health Month, Smiles Change Lives (SCL) in Kansas City, Missouri is sponsoring candy exchange events nationwide. This allows children to trade in some or all of their candy for healthy alternatives. The candy is then shipped to our troops overseas or given to local charities. So kids can have the opportunity to hand over the cavity-causing treats, get some fun gifts in return AND learn about sharing. What could be better?

Still convinced that sugar for Halloween is the only way to go? Then make sure that your little ones (and you too!) are practicing proper oral hygiene.

For those times through the rest of the year when you might crave a sweet treat, do yourself a favor and pop one of our sugar free cinnamon/vanilla flavored ZOX Mints or our new citrus-mint TheraBreath Mouth Wetting Lozenges. They actually promote saliva production, get rid of unpleasant flavors and order and attack the germs that cause bad breath.
