Is Bad Breath a Warning Sign of Major Illnesses?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

bad breath

Bad breath (halitosis), especially if its chronic, can sometimes be a symptom of a much more major dilemma. It is very important that people do not overlook this problem, because it can be a sign of a terminal illness. Dental experts have linked halitosis to everything from pneumonia, bronchitis, chronic sinus infections to liver problems, kidney problems, and diabetes. People who have gastritis can have halitosis because of their stomach’s high acidic levels.

Unfortunately, most people do not regard bad breath as a serious problem, and just try to disguise it with peppermint or mouthwash. Halitosis has also been linked to chronic acid reflux and constipation. If one is practicing good oral hygiene, and avoiding foods that cause strong odors like petai, onions, etc., then it is possible that one has a problem that is more than just bad breath.

Many people will find that chewing gum only hides the bad breath and bad tastes temporarily. According to dental experts, 80% of bad breath sufferers have a mouth-related illness causing the problem; however, few people actually make regular visits to the dentist as needed. Tooth decay, cavities, gingivitis, dry mouth (xerostamia, caused by the lack of saliva), and oral cancer all cause halitosis. If a person has gum disease and does not treat it, it can lead to serious damage to the gums and jawbone. Some sources say that mouthwashes containing alcohol have been linked to oral cancer!  TheraBreath is an example of a mouthwash that does NOT have alcohol as an ingredient.

Does Your Dog Have Bad Breath?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

bad breath in dogs

While most people just accept the fact that their dog’s breath smells like…well, dog breath…what they don’t realize is that odor might signify serious health risks with the potential to damage not only your pooches’ teeth and gums but also its internal organs.  To address the significance of oral health care for pets, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and several other veterinary groups have joined to declare February as National Pet Dental Health Month.

Bacteriologist and fresh breath guru, Dr. Harold Katz, is not only an expert on fresh breath for humans, he is also THE expert on fresh breath for man’s best friend. Dr. Katz is available to come in-studio with his electronic breath testing device, the Halimeter, and measure some pups’ breath on air, giving pet parents sensible tips on how to prevent doggie gum disease and get rid of bad breath in dogs for good!

Katz has been a featured guest on tons of local and national TV shows across the country.  Click here to view his most recent interview on Fox & Friends, and to access his full demo reel: http://www.viddler.com/explore/drkatz/videos/123/.

Dr. Katz is Now a Columnist for Huffington Post!

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Our very own Dr. Katz is now a columnist for the Huffington Post!  He wrote his first article for this newspaper today, called “Does Your Breath Make Cupid Faint? How To Keep Your Bad Breath From Wilting Her Valentine’s Day Flowers.”  He gives some major pointers on how you can avoid bad breath on a day where it definitely is a downfall to have halitosis

In the article, he mentions that some sources of bad breath are milk chocolate, candy hearts, foods with a high concentration of sulfur compounds, including onions and garlic (even cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels Sprouts!), champagne, wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages.  Furthermore, most oral hygiene products have not changed in over 100 years!  Most mouthwashes contain alcohol, which causes dehydration (thus causing bad breath), and many toothpastes have the harsh detergent Sodium Lauryl Sulfate as an ingredient.  Sodium Lauryl Sulfate allegedly causes canker sores…and halitosis, of course.  Breath mints and chewing gum contain sugar, which helps the bad breath-causing bacteria proliferate in your mouth.

Dr. Katz provides some tips on combating bad breath on Valentine’s Day.  Try drinking tea instead of coffee, and avoid sugar if you can.  Eat dark chocolate instead of normal chocolate, since it has less sugar and no dairy.  Eat fruits and veggies that have a lot of water like apples, strawberries, watermelon, and celery.

In order to prevent morning-after breath, you should oxygenate your mouth, so keep hydrated and use oxygenating oral products like gum, toothpaste, or mouthwash before you go to sleep.
